THE QUESTION THAT HAS BEEN ON EVERYONE’S LIPS SINCE THE PUBLICATION OF THE DA VINCI CODE IN APRIL, 2003 IS “HOW MUCH OF WHAT HE SAYS IS TRUE?” GRANTED, AUTHOR DAN BROWN SAYS AT THE BEGINNING OF HIS NOVEL THAT “ALL DESCRIPTIONS OF ARTWORK, ARCHITECTURE, DOCUMENTS AND SECRET RITUALS IN THIS NOVEL ARE ACCURATE” BUT IT IS FICTION, AFTER ALL, AND SURELY HE’S ALLOWED JUST A LITTLE POETIC LICENSE?
The purpose of this book is to try to separate fact from fiction. It’s not easy! Sometimes the subject matter that Brown uses looks a certain way from one perspective and completely different from another.
The Christian church certainly feels it is under the spotlight because of The Do Vinci Code -and it is not fond of being observed with a critical eye. The Church has depended upon the faith of its followers for 2000 years and conveniently for them faith is belief without evidence. Christianity has been unable to provide any convincing proof of much that it wants its followers to believe and for more than the last century has had to defend itself in the face of a variety of scientific discoveries that it wishes would just go away.
Now the Church once again finds itself facing difficult questions, this time all because of a best-selling novel called The Do Vinci Code.
The Da Vinci Code has been such a resounding success, not because of the admittedly engaging, but rather run-of-the mill adventure/murder plot, but because Dan Brown has stimulated his readers to see previously accepted familiar “truths” in a totally unfamiliar light.
In so doing, he has whetted the appetites of many, yet leaves them curiously unsatisfied at the end of the novel. Brown
provokes his readers into asking themselves difficult questions and I hope that this book will go at least some way towards satisfying people’s developing appetite for this type of material.
Some of us think that there has been a “softening up process over the last couple of decades to lead mankind towards some kind of spiritual revelation. This has been done through science fiction films like The Matrix trilogy and popular interest in and debate on esoteric phenomena as diverse as UFOs and crop circles. This revelation could even take the form of excavations at Rennes-le-Chateau, resulting in recognition of the Grail families.
Dan Brown’s subversive novel The Da Vinci Code has contributed much to the change the world is going through. Are you part of this change and do you want to know more?
